Slovenia is a small and unassuming country, nicely nestled into a nook in between Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Italy. Boasting a diverse landscape which includes a slice out of the Alps, a small portion of the Adriatic coastline, and wine making country in the north east valleys, Slovenia might just be the remarkable little country you weren't looking for, but rather stumbled upon along the way. And who doesn't want to play cultural explorer? With a motorhome in tow, you'll effortlessly manage to see all that Slovenia has to offer. Read on to find out more about what motorhome hire in Slovenia could have in store for you.
If you're planning on flying directly into the country, then a good option is to from London Stansted to Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. Slovenia is a member of the Schengen Zone, so if you're coming from Italy, Austria, or Hungary by motorhome or other means of transport, generally there are no border controls. If arriving from Croatia, you'll need to show your passport or driving licence when making the crossing. Many suppliers are happy for you to take their motorhomes over to other European countries, but just make sure you check their policies concerning travel restrictions beforehand.
If you plan to pick up your motorhome from one of our suppliers in Slovenia, there is a pick up point in the town of Rače in the north-east of the country. Alternatively, an airport pick-up service can be arranged from the main airport in Ljubljana, meaning you can be on your way as soon as you touch down.
From the airport, instead of taking the conventional route straight to the capital, why not head north-west to the atmospheric Alpine town of Bled, Slovenia's most popular resort. Here you'll find medieval castles hanging over rocky cliffs, some of the highest peaks of the Julian and Karavanke Alps. And it's a popular destination with backpackers and outdoor sports enthusiasts for hiking, biking and canyoning.
Slovenians are an outdoorsy lot, which is reflected in the surprisingly large selection of campsites available to stay at. Many are situated in attractive locations, have pitches for motorhomes and are well equipped with hot showers, washing machines, chemical toilet disposal facilities and food shops, with some offering sports activities and even spa treatments!
After Bled, head south to the centre and the capital of the country, the historic city of Ljubljana. This attractive, petite city offers all the usual high quality city fare in terms of museums, café culture, historical sights and a splendid hilltop castle. The advantage being that everything is a mere short walk away (this is a city of only 270,000). So no city fatigue!
From Ljubljana, Slovenia really is your oyster in terms of where you can go next. Start heading towards the country's small coastline and stop off along the way to visit the unconquerable Predjama Castle, underneath which you can take an excursion down into the famous Postojna Cave. Once you've reached the coastline, the Istrian town of Piran is unmissable. Here you can relax on the beach overlooking the Adriatic Sea, in the midst of some beautiful Venetian inspired architecture; or take a wander back in time along Piran's winding medieval streets.
Other fantastic locations include the beach town of Portoroz; Vipava Valley, where you can test the local wine; and the spectacular Triglav National Park, in the Alpine region in the north-west. Wherever you decide to go, you'll be glad you made Slovenia a stop on your motorhome hire holiday this year.
